Understand PDF/A Archive Standards: A Definitive Guide

Why Standard PDFs Fail Long-Term Preservation

Standard PDF files permit dynamic features such as external font links, embedded audio streams, or JavaScript automation. While these enrich interactive documents, they introduce substantial dependencies. If an external URL dies or an OS drops support for a font format, the document might render with missing characters years later.

The PDF/A Specification (ISO 19005)

PDF/A (Portable Document Format for Archives) solves this by enforced self-containment. Everything required to reproduce the visual layout must exist directly inside the file binary itself.

Crucial Rules Enforced by PDF/A

  • Mandatory Font Inclusion: Every typeface used in the document must be embedded inside the binary container.
  • No External Content References: External calls to outside fonts, linked images, or remote network sources are strictly forbidden.
  • Ban on Active Code: Dynamic JavaScript, executable code, and encryption passwords are not allowed.
